As I was going through the recipes on my site, I came to realize that I have very few breakfast recipes on here! Breakfast is my favorite meal of the day, and is the time I can relax before I start my day. I’ve been obsessed with hot cereal, oatmeal, and porridge lately because I just love the warming benefits it gives my body in the morning. Since I don’t want to eat the same old thing everyday, I’ve come up with a variety of flavorings to switch things up. This golden milk porridge is a great way to start your day, there are endless benefits to golden milk, and combining it in a porridge is a really comforting way to get it in your system.
Lets talk about why golden milk is so good for you. Turmeric has been used as a spice in Indian recipes and as Ayurvedic medicine for many thousands of years. Turmeric offers many health benefits since it has both anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant properties. It is used to relieve swelling and pain due to headaches and wounds and is called ‘natural aspirin’ in Ayurvedic medicine. It also possesses anti-bacterial properties and when applied to small cuts and wounds, it can stem blood flow by aiding with blood clotting, & it helps prevent infections and heals wounds. Combined with coconut milk, turmeric is used as a drink, lotion or even a face mask. Both coconut milk and turmeric are anti-oxidants. Golden milk helps fights free radicals that damage skin and make it lose its glow and elasticity. Most of us know of turmeric face masks and how they help skin, but internal usage of turmeric (as milk or otherwise) can also help. Golden milk works as a soothing mask or lotion to reduce redness of the skin. Golden milk is also a great way for general body detox. Drinking golden milk daily can help in blood purification and liver detox. Blood impurities can lead to sever health problems and golden milk is a great way to combat it. Turmeric is said to help those with Alzheimer’s disease by slowing its progress and lowers risk of various types of cancer.
I know I just threw a lot of information your way, but now you know a few of the many more beneficial properties of golden milk. I like drinking it in the morning because it helps just detoxify my body after sleeping, and helps wake me up and get my digestive track ready for the day. Now I know this recipe is for golden milk porridge, BUT if you want to just drink some golden milk on its own, use the same measurements listed below of coconut milk, spices, & coconut nectar and heat them on the stove top until warm, and drink! Super simple- Let’s get into it!
So let’s talk ingredients. You’ll need unsweetened regular coconut milk, ground ginger, ground cloves, ground cinnamon, ground turmeric, ground nutmeg, pink himalayan salt, blonde coconut nectar (can use maple syrup instead), dried goldenberries (can use raisins instead), diced golden delicious apple, and steel cut oats. I chose to use steel cut oats in this because I like the chewy texture they give when cooked in this method. You can also use whatever dried fruits / fresh fruits you’d like as well, I personally like apples and goldenberries, but chopped dates & mango is nice for a more tropical feel. I also top my porridge always with some kind of nut milk & frozen berries, today I used more coconut milk, regular unsweetened, and frozen raspberries. I like using frozen berries because I almost always have them on hand, and they kind of melt into the porridge- infusing it with a fruit syrup almost, and they give a really nice texture / cold crunch to the dish to lighten it up.
Start by adding your oats, coconut milk, spices, and coconut nectar to a pot over high heat until it comes to a boil. Reduce heat to medium – low, and simmer for about 5 minutes. Then add your chopped goldenberries & apples (or whatever fruit you’re using), stir, and allow to simmer for another 10-15 minutes until your oats are cooked through and chewy. Add more milk if it becomes too thick though, you want like a pancake batter kind of consistency. When your porridge is ready, transfer to a bowl, and top with coconut milk, and frozen raspberries.
This recipe really is so simple, and takes very little time or effort to recreate, and the health benefits from this are endless! You can also make it in a larger batch (this recipe is one serving), and place it in small mason jars in the fridge for easy pre made breakfasts everyday! - 1 cup regular unsweetened coconut milk
- 1/3 cup steel cut oats
- 1 tbs ground cinnamon
- 1 tbs ground turmeric
- 1/2 tbs ground ginger
- 1/4 tbs ground cloves
- 1/4 tbs ground nutmeg
- 1/8 tbs pink himalayan salt
- 2 tbs blonde coconut nectar
- 1/2 cup dried goldenberries
- 1/2-1 golden delicious apple, diced
- toppings: coconut milk, frozen raspberries
- Place your coconut milk, spices & salt, coconut nectar, and oats in a small saucepan over high heat. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to medium – low, and simmer for about 5 minutes, stirring frequently.
- Add your chopped apple & goldenberries, and stir to combine. Simmer for another 10-15 minutes, until the oats are cooked and chewy.
- Transfer to a bowl, and top with extra coconut milk, and frozen raspberries. Serve & Enjoy!
